Eight years ago I was in an emaciated condition, ate very little, and was indifferent to everything and everybody. One night a friend lent me her copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and while reading the chapter on Prayer I felt that the most wonderful message I had ever read had come to me—I was truly "born again." The depressed condition I was in had completely left my thought, so that a few days later a neighbor called and asked me if I could tell him the cause of the wonderful change that had come over me. I told him I was reading Science and Health and that he could purchase the book at a Christian Science Reading Room. This he did the next day and, while reading it, was freed of a severe headache that had lasted several days.
Shortly after this I was in need of help. At the same time a great doubt came over me, for I remember turning to my friend while my hand held the telephone receiver and saying, "Shall I call a doctor or a practitioner?" With a loving smile she quietly said, "You must decide that for yourself." I called the practitioner and was healed. Since that time I have had no doubt of the healing power of Christian Science. I am very grateful to have been led to see the light in this way. Soon the desire for drinking and smoking, together with superficial social activities, left me, without any apparent effort on my part.
I am most grateful for the gradual disappearance of wrong traits of character, the elimination of which I find always helps me to listen for God's voice. I have been healed of a terrific pain in my shoulder, known as neuritis. The pain was so intense that it seemed impossible to think clearly; so I called for the help of a practitioner. This condition has not returned, although previously it had been troubling me for a number of years.
