Your correspondent, whose letter appears in your issue...

Natal Witness

Your correspondent, whose letter appears in your issue of September 9th, states that "he does not know the teachings of Christian Science too well." This being so, the wisest course to take would be to make a thorough and unbiased study of the subject. Such a study would convince him that Christian Science is in accord with and is fully sustained by the Scriptures.

Thousands of men, women, and children in every walk of life have found the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to be indeed a "key" to the Scriptures, for it has unlocked for them the treasures contained in that sacred storehouse; and it has, moreover, unfolded to them the Science of spiritual healing, the Science which supported all that Jesus taught and practiced and commanded his followers to do.

Christian Science affirms God's allness, His omnipresence and omnipotence, and in this it is fully sustained by the Scriptures. In Isaiah we read, "I am the Lord, and there is none else;" and in Genesis we find this statement, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good;" whilst the prophet Habakkuk declares, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity."

The logical deduction is that sin, disease, pain, and evil were not made by God, have no law of His to support them, and are therefore no part of His divine creation: hence their unreality.

Christian Science does not teach its students that erroneous and discordant conditions may be overcome by blindly ignoring them or dismissing them as "a fancy of the mind," hoping with the optimism of a Micawber that something will turn up to remedy them. Rather does it reveal that all human discord has its seeming origin in the so-called human or carnal mind, and is the result of wrong thinking. The remedy unquestionably lies in replacing these wrong thoughts with perfect harmonious thoughts which emanate only from Mind, God.

Paul said, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus;" and, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Thus it will be seen that Christian Scientists do not pretend that the things of sense are all right, or that they are well, but rather do they strive to "prove all things," and to "hold fast that which is good."

Christian Science accords the right of the individual to choose that form of religion and that method of healing which he feels will best promote his health and happiness, but Christian Science requests the privilege of correcting statements which are likely to give readers incorrect or misleading information concerning its teachings and practice. Your correspondent will understand then that it is no part of the duties of the Committee on Publication to enter into a controversy on the interpretation of the Scriptures. He is free to entertain that interpretation which will help him most, and Christian Scientists will in no wise interfere with him in the exercise of his beliefs.
