Freedom through Christian Science
There is not a person on earth who does not in some way and in some degree believe himself at times fettered by materiality. One has only to cast one's eyes almost casually around to see this. What of ourselves? Have not we all felt the oppression of sickness, more or less acutely? Have not we all been more or less fooled by sin in some of its guises? And the sad thing is that so comparatively few know how to free themselves. As Mrs. Eddy has written on page 225 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Men and women of all climes and races are still in bondage to material sense, ignorant how to obtain their freedom."
It is material sense that binds mankind. What will free it? Christian Science shows that the exercise of spiritual sense will do so. Now the wonderful thing is that all possess this divine faculty. And how we rejoice over it! In those of strong moral purpose, it appears as a steady influence. In those who are depraved, it may seem to be present only as an undeveloped force. But as it has been proved time and again in Christian Science, the tiny spiritual spark can be fanned into an ardent flame through spiritual understanding, thereby burning up the rubbish of sinful material sense and liberating the gold of moral character.
It is spiritual sense which acquaints us with spiritual reality,—with goodness, beauty, purity, love,—those qualities which have no trace of materiality about them. It is spiritual sense which informs us that God, Spirit, is the source of all spiritual qualities. And here is where Christian Science is most illuminating: it declares that God, Spirit, is infinite good; and from this it follows that what are called matter and evil are unreal. Hence, so-called material sense, which claims to inform us of matter and evil and their effects, is likewise unreal. Christian Science thus maintains that men are totally deceived when they believe what material sense tells them of evil, be it in the form of sin or disease. When through Christian Science we become aware of the fact that nothing is real of which material sense informs us, the way is made clear for the obtaining of our freedom.
