It is with a heart overflowing with gratitude to God and to...
It is with a heart overflowing with gratitude to God and to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, that I testify to the healing power of Christian Science. One fall, while having a vacation, I decided to stay at home and read and study. During this time a seemingly discordant condition presented itself to me in the form of a very bad sore throat. It was very painful, and so swollen I could scarcely swallow. I had learned to search within for the seeming cause of inharmony of any sort, and the thought came to me, Perhaps you have not been praising God enough. I took the Christian Science Hymnal and said, "If I cannot sing these hymns audibly, I can sing them mentally," so I spent the rest of the day with my hymnal before me; and in going over the beautiful hymns, especially those written by our dear Leader, I forgot about the sore throat. When I thought of it some time later, it was like the "green bay tree"—not to be found. There was no room for pain or suffering in a consciousness filled with praise and gratitude to God. A few days later I was able to overcome in a few hours a severe attack of ptomaine poisoning by applying the truth as taught in Christian Science. This error presented itself in the small hours of the night, at a time when I was alone in the house and could not call a practitioner for help.
Within the next few days an old enemy attacked me—severe cramp in my left foot and limb. The pain was almost unbearable, but was quickly overcome by declaring the truth. It then seized me in the other foot and limb, but was again quickly overcome. Then the condition seemed to return with redoubled force in both feet and limbs. This was also after midnight, when I was alone in the house and could not call for help. As I applied the truth the best I could under the circumstances, the thought came to me to get up and stand. With great difficulty I arose. Then the thought came to take a step, which I did, and another step, and another, declaring the truth at each step. Then something seemed to say, Reverse the error. This I did, and almost instantaneously the pain ceased.
Over three years ago I lost everything I had, but through the persistent study of Christian Science I had been laying up "treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt." This truth so sustained me that I did not for one moment lack anything needful, and did not have to ask for help from anyone. The thing for which I am most thankful is that I did not feel the blow. Shortly afterward I was offered a temporary position, which I accepted, knowing that if it was right for me to have this place I would be able to do the work, which was different from anything I had ever done. I was abel to fill the position acceptably, and shortly afterward was made a permanent employee. This position is more remunerative than my former business and is free from personal responsibility and worry.
