Evangelization of Self

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE draws a clear line of distinction between unselfed love, as the reflection of divine Love, replete with healing power, and the merely human unselfishness which holds itself at the beck and call of individuals, some of whom may be unreasonably exacting. This time and thought-absorbing so-called kindness is easily imposed upon and may be found robbing both the unselfish individual and those whom he is mistakenly indulging. Therefore, the Christian Scientist may rightly guard against merely human unselfishness, undirected by divine Principle. It is noticeable that adulation and personal gratitude are usually showered upon the humanly kind person. This, if not unmasked, may lull one into stagnant self-satisfaction, for counterfeit good is apt to stunt both spiritual growth and even the very desire for it.

The stimulating statement that "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years" should be ever before the Christian Scientist, for it is evident that one thousand wasted years would not register as much spiritual growth as one well-spent day. What we all need is that daily decrease in materiality which makes of us vessel "meet for the master's use."

On page 254 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "The human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual." To-day and each day the student of Christian Science needs to draw consciously nearer to God and to demonstrate more of Godlikeness. Spiritual growth cannot be attained if subordinated to merely human service. One great need is that of regular study of the Bible, our Leader's writings, and authorized Christian Science literature. When the desire for this study is awakened, the time for it will always be made available without involving the neglect of necessary duties.
