Christian Science came to me over eighteen years ago,...
Christian Science came to me over eighteen years ago, and it has been my guide and shield ever since. When I first heard of it I was suffering from valvular heart disease, which I had had for seven years, and which no doctor was able to heal. One day a dear friend told me to try Christian Science, and took me to a practitioner, who lovingly tried to explain what he knew about it. In reply I talked on spiritualism! After about ten days' treatments, and many visits, I informed my friend that I was just the same. He then requested me to change practitioners, and I went to a lady for help. My friend told me to leave my views on spiritualism alone, and to listen only to the teachings of Christian Science. I did so, with the result that in my first treatment I was completely healed, and walked out of the house as if I were treading on air.
That was in September, 1910; and I thank God for it, for to-day I am well, and have been before army and insurance doctors as proof of a perfect healing. On page 242 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, I learned in my hour of need these words: "In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love,—which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death."
Since then I have had numerous proofs of the protecting power of divine Love. In 1918, when returning home from work in Bombay, I slipped off a ledge into a drain, to find later that I had hurt my spine. The mesmerism of the East had made me lapse, and instead of turning to God I turned to the doctors. After a year of all kinds of treatments, a Christian Science practitioner passing through Bombay lovingly treated me. I was healed in a week; but three years later, while in Calcutta, when hauling some large packing cases, I strained myself and the trouble returned. Next morning, on rising, I went to lift a small table and collapsed over it. I then felt as if I were paralyzed from my hips downwards. I called my wife and asked her for two putties, which I wound about me for support. I found they were insufficient, so I took them off and requested her to sew them together. During this time of pain I was realizing that my support was in Mind, and not in the bandages; so when my wife handed them back to me, sewed together, I refused them. I lay back and continued to know the allness of Mind. Suddenly I sat up, free of all pain in my back; but with my limbs still useless, I just sat there and went on working. Within a few minutes I arose, perfectly healed. It took twenty-five minutes to make this demonstration. This was in 1921, and there has been no return since of the error.
