It was through attending a Christian Science Wednesday...
It was through attending a Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting that the regenerating and healing work of Christian Science was revealed to me. After pondering what I had gleaned from the testimonies heard at that service, I had a great desire to purchase a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I went to a Christian Science Reading Room and made the purchase, resolving to put prejudice aside and prayerfully to put these teachings to the test in working out my own salvation. When I read the first words in the Preface (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," a load of discouragement, helplessness, self-pity, self-righteousness, and kindred evils that weigh heavily in mortal thought, was lifted from my consciousness and replaced with trust, encouragement, hopefulness, humility, and peace. With that change of thought the criticism I had held towards Christian Science was overcome, and I began to realize why Christian Scientists revere their Leader. I was at once convinced I had found the help I had been yearning for; and from that day in November, 1914, Christian Science has been my only help in every time of need, and a sustaining help and guidance every step of the way.
For five years after becoming a student of Christian Science I seemed to have a great many difficulties to wrestle with, tow of them being a return of the grippe and a felon on my finger. Both of these difficulties had on former occasions been treated by so-called material science, and I had experienced fear and suffering for an extended period; but I was healed permanently by studying the Bible, the Christian Science textbook, the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and clinging to "the scientific statement of being" in the textbook (p. 468), the ninety-first and twenty-third psalms, the Ten Commandments, and the Beatitudes. I had always lived a Christian life as far as I had learned how to in a so-called orthodox church, but I did not learn to trust God for healing and prove Him omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient in my daily needs until I became a student of Christian Science. These teachings have been priceless in showing me that my help is ever present, and that man as God's image and likeness is coexistent with and inseparable from God.
Since becoming a student of Christian Science I have sometimes received help and healing from the loving work of practitioners; and much help has come to me from Mrs. Eddy's writings, the periodicals, the church services, the lectures, and boundless good from class instruction. Christian Science has given me good health and peace of mind.
