In connection with the editorial, "Happiness, Vital Factor in Extending Life," in your issue of August 12, in which is set out the opinion of the medical director of the Life Extension Institute, as expressed in the August issue of the Review of Reviews, please permit me to make a distinction between Christian Science and Couéism for the benefit of your readers, who could easily infer, from the manner in which the doctor links them together, that they are similar, if not one and the same thing. Such an inference would be wholly wrong. There is no more similarity between Christian Science and Couéism than there is between light and darkness.

Christian Science does not negate a pessimistic mental attitude or unhappiness by autosuggestion or so-called human will, nor by merely declaring or thinking that conditions are different from what outward appearances indicate.

Christian Science through precept and practice, has proved that the causes for all human misery are to be found in the human or, as the Apostle Paul terms it, the carnal mind (which he says "is enmity against God" and must be put off), in the form of fear, sin, hate, malice, greed, selfishness, resentment, bad temper, pessimism, lack, and the like, and teaches how these harmful conditions of thought can be put off by obedience to Paul's injunctions, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus," and, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Thus it is that Christian Science attacks and destroys the causes of all human misery, sin, sickness, and death included; and herein lies its efficiency.
