I had suffered all my life from rheumatism; and part of...
I had suffered all my life from rheumatism; and part of one foot had been amputated as the result of an accident. I also had a weak heart and a hernia which had kept me from taking part in the many activities of childhood. I was brought up in a strict religious environment, but early learned to think for myself and to question many things that I was taught.
I decided to be a physician and graduated from a training school for nurses as a means to the desired end, but never ceased questioning and doubting all things, thus adding to my confusion, which resulted finally in many of the sicknesses to which the human body is supposed to be heir. After I had been married a few years it seemed as if I were doomed to a life of inactivity with, possibly, crutches as my only means of getting around. In my darkest moment a neighbor was healed through Christian Science. I was so interested in her case, for just to think that she could have even relief was marvelous to me, as I saw her case from a medical standpoint. Soon after that a friend asked me to attend the Christian Science church with her, and then I asked for help from a practitioner. Being told to get "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I did so and read it from cover to cover, bur could not get one iota of sense out of it. The second reading upset all my nicely set notions, and I was so angry with the book that I finally hid it where I would not see it. In the meantime I was walking doing things I had not done for months, but gave no credit to Christian Science. Then the practitioner told me she could do nothing more for me as I was too stubborn. I said some very hard things; but now I can express my gratitude for all she did for me, as the seed she planted over eighteen years ago is bearing fruit.
Needless to say, I had some hard lessons to learn after that. When I was recovering from one of these experiences I came across my copy of Science and Health, and began to read it again. I then realized I had found what I had been struggling for all my life, and I never again let go of the little I gained each day of Christian Science. Then I began to receive my reward. I discontinued the use of glasses after wearing them for years. One by one the physical ailments disappeared, and I became well and strong and overcame a very bad temper. Faultfinding and hatred are giving place to love in my thought. I had Christian Science help when our son was born, and he has known no other kind of healing. An attack of mumps was healed instantaneously, measles in two days, broken bones in less than a week, and a cut artery closed in a few minutes. Above all, however, are the peace that passes understanding and the glorious spiritual uplifting.
