Christian Science came to me when I was in much need...
Christian Science came to me when I was in much need of healing, both mental and physical. Many members of my family had passed on with tuberculosis, and it seemed as if I might be the next. The necessity for self-support, and the determination to keep up as long as possible, had kept me at my work, even though suffering constantly. A sense of discouragement, despondency, loneliness, separation, sorrow, and injustice had became chronic.
Christian Science came to me. I did not seek it, for I knew nothing of it. I had been a member of an orthodox church for twenty years and thought I was trying to live a Christian life. At this period I was asked to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to a friend. Desiring to be helpful, I agreed; but with no thought of physical benefit to myself. A loving Scientist explained to me the Christian Science concept of God and man's relation to Him. She supplied us with literature and taught us how to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. As soon as I had begun to read, I realized I had found the truth, and hungrily devoured everything I could get on the subject; but it did not occur to me to try to apply the teaching to my own case: I had accepted that as "my lot."
I cannot remember how long I had been reading, whether six months, a year, or more: like the man born blind (see John 9:25), there is much "I know not;" but this I do know, I was healed to the lung trouble during a Christian Science Sunday morning service, and have never had a pain in the lungs since. That was over fifteen years ago. I then weighed less than ninety pounds, and now weigh a hundred and forty-five. As I continued to read year after year, physical difficulties of long standing vanished, among them catarrh of the head, throat, and ears, rheumatism, and eczema. There also came a great change in disposition, false pride, resentment, irritability, giving place to peace, contentment, and more patience.
