Beckenham Journal
In reply to the letter of "Inquirer" in your recent issue, may I say that Christian Scientists obey the great commandment, "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord." Hence the capitalization to which your correspondent refers. On page 303 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mary Baker Eddy writes: "I believe in one Christ, teach one Christ, know of but one Christ. I believe in but one incarnation, one Mother Mary." If your correspondent does not understand the difference between the Christ and Jesus, between the unseen and the seen, the spiritual and the material, which Christian Science makes clear, he will not be able to understand many of the statements of our Master about himself in the Bible. The reverence in which Christ Jesus is held by Christian Scientists is clearly shown by the following passage on pages 312 and 313 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy: "Jesus' spiritual origin and his demonstration of divine Principle richly endowed him and entitled him to sonship in science. He was the son of a virgin. The term Christ Jesus, or Jesus the Christ (to give the full and proper translation of the Greek), may be rendered 'Jesus the anointed,' Jesus the God-crowned or the divinely royal man, as it is said of him in the first chapter of Hebrews:—
"Therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee
With the oil of gladness above thy fellows."
