[Written for the Sentinel]

Obedience

Shall learning then
Speak to me in paradox?
Confusing me,
Saying in one breath, "Go!"
And "Stand!"

Solomon achieved enough
Of wisdom once
To see behind the paradox.
There is a time,
He said,
To every purpose;
A time to get,
A time to lose,
A time to rend,
A time to sew,
A time to keep,
A time to cast away.

Then all that signifies
Is that it be God
Who bids me "Go!"
Who bids me "Stand!"
Thus shall I safely go,
And safely stand.
