On Guarding Our Thoughts
It is what one thinks that chiefly counts, "for as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." It is of the greatest importance, therefore, that we think rightly, that we think good thoughts, pure thoughts, true thoughts. Christian Science lays great stress on right thinking. And what is more, Christian Science goes to the very foundation of right thinking, to the divine Principle whence emanate all true ideas, and which instructs those who seek its aid how to discriminate between the true and the false and to choose the true.
Christian Science makes plain the fact that since God is divine Mind, infinite intelligence, He governs His creation, including man, perfectly. Mrs. Eddy could therefore write (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 393), "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government." But she did not stop there; she immediately went on to state what this understanding enables us to do in controlling fear and in preventing the development of inharmonious conditions, in the words, "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation."
If Mrs. Eddy's words just quoted be carefully considered, it becomes apparent that the student must first of all be firmly persuaded as to the allness of God, and assured that "man reflects God's government" or is perfectly governed. Unless he have this certainty, he will remain at the mercy of mortal mind and be the victim of its false beliefs; possessed of this certainty, he is in the position of being able to take an affirmative stand on the side of good and to give an emphatic denial to evil in its every form—sin, fear, disease, pain, included.
