Christian Science has proved and is proving for me that God is a God at hand and not a God afar off.
For some years previous to taking up the study of Christian Science, as a certain month came round each year I suffered from a very discordant condition of the body which lasted two weeks or more. I had been studying "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy for some time and attending the Christian Science services, when one of these attacks came on. I at once went to a practitioner, who lovingly treated me in Christian Science, and in a few hours I was completely healed. This was some years ago, and the healing has been permanent.
I feel especially grateful for the Christian Science lectures and for the great help, physical and mental, that I have received from them. On one occasion my right foot was swollen and very painful, and making the effort to go out to do my shopping was a great trial. I was applying Christian Science as well as I understood it, but the difficulty seemed stubborn and tenacious. One morning I met the Christian Scientist referred to, who remarked, "Of course you are coming to the Christian Science lecture to-night?" I replied that my foot was too bad. She said, "The lecture will heal it." Then I told her, "I never go out at night since the shooting commenced" (it was during the disturbed times in Dublin). "God will protect you going there and coming back," was the encouraging reply. Well, I went out, and—oh, my joy and gratitude!—I was healed during the lecture; and that night there was not a shot fired in the city. At another lecture I was healed instantly of lumbago. At the last lecture my thought was so helped that a business problem which had confronted me for some time was solved the next day.
