"Proofs of God's care"
While many rejoice in the healing which Christian Science brings, not infrequently the student despairingly asks, "Why do I have so many problems to solve?" Often condemnation follows, because years of study apparently have not fortified him against physical suffering and other untoward conditions. Furthermore, perhaps, he begins to doubt the quality and extent of his comprehension of the divine Principle of this Science.
With complete finality Mrs. Eddy anticipates this state of thought when she declares (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 66), "Trials are proofs of God's care." Every science must prove its dependability through tests of some sort. A mastery of the field of mathematics is obtained only after sedulous study and the working out of numerous problems. Christian Science requires without presumption the humility which accepts similar tests in order to demonstrate the omnipotence and omnipresence of infinite divine Principle.
Paul rejoiced in tribulation because his perception was keenly alert to the foibles and mistakes of the so-called carnal mind. He saw that his understanding of God could be advanced only by grappling with beliefs of sickness, sin, and death, and by disproving their reality. Indolent mortal mind finds no profit in evading problems, since Christian Science offers no such tempting mirage. Progress is the law of supreme wisdom; hence growth is inevitable. The Scriptural command, "Work out your own salvation," points the way. Daniel was not spared the lions' den; the young Hebrews submitted to the fiery flames; a serpent fastened upon Paul's hand. But what does the blessed gospel of healing reply? "No power can withstand divine Love" (Science and Health, p. 224); and numerous Bible narratives were witness to the same story. Can we not, then, with joy daily face the discordant conditions which clamor so loudly for acknowledgment? Such joy evinces trust in God's goodness; and with this trust a divine calm and peace will attend every moment of the day.
