Fact versus Falsity

The student who is just awakening to the truths of Christian Science often gropes blindly about for a way in which to make these truths practical; that is, he wonders just how the Christian Scientist should work, or what constitutes a Christian Science treatment. To such Mrs. Eddy's words on page 129 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" are of direct and immediate help: "If you wish to know the spiritual fact, you can discover it by reversing the material fable, be the fable pro or con,—be it in accord with your preconceptions or utterly contrary to them." A dictionary definition of "fact" is "reality, truth, not supposition." Therefore, when we have grasped the fact about any problem, we have laid hold of a spiritual idea. The nature of the spiritual idea never changes, because it is the reflection of Principle, the same yesterday, to-day, and forever; and when we have learned the fact, we have learned that which is true for all time.

In every healing recorded in the Scriptures, published in the Christian Science periodicals, spoken at the Wednesday evening testimony meetings in Christian Science churches and societies, and the many thousands that are known perhaps only to those who experience them, there has first been the realization on the part of someone of the fact which reverses the fable. This realization comes to one only as he turns from the argument that mortal mind would have him accept as true, and ponders its opposite; as he keeps thought stayed on the very reverse of that which seems to be. The divine Mind must be our guide, and we must declare and insist that right where the disease, discontent, discomfort, discouragement, disobedience, discourtesy, or any other error seems to be, there in fact is God, Love, good, the all-knowing, the all-inclusive, the All-in-all—right there divine Mind reigns. As we continue thus we lose the false sense, because it is replaced by the true sense; and we then experience healing. Since God is divine Principle, that only can express right operation and real existence which is a reflection of Principle, which is eternal, unchanging good, "altogether lovely." Mrs. Eddy says in "Unity of Good" (p. 14), "What is in eternal Mind must be reflected in man, Mind's image."

We have given to us for our study, encouragement, and guidance many instances throughout the Scriptures where the truth realized brought freedom, deliverance, supply, enlightenment, and harmony. Mrs. Eddy through spiritual vision was able to understand how these healings were made possible; and she gives us a very explicit method for gaining correct results when she says on page 492 of Science and Health, "For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence." We must in great gratitude hold this sense of existence before our thought continually, that it may result in the harmony we seek.
