The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

DANZIG, DANZIG FREE STATE (Society).

Lecturer: Prof. Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Mrs. Vera Fischer, who said:—

Before I found Christian Science I had searched for and often experienced the love of God. I longed to be able to understand the Scriptures; but again and again I seemed to encounter contradictions, and could not reconcile many experiences of daily life with them, nor with a God of love. Then I found Christian Science. The textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was given to me with the remark, "Perhaps you will find an answer to your questions in this book." Full of gratitude and joy, through that textbook I learned to recognize God as immutable Love. The seeming contradictions were solved, and I took the Bible as my fundamental teacher. As a natural result of this study, and to my own surprise, at that time I was healed in two weeks of nearsightedness of many years' standing.

KIMBERLEY, SOUTH AFRICA (Society).

Lecturer: Algernon Hervey Bathurst; introduced by Mrs. Emily H. Bayliss, who said:—

There have been many great and marvelous discoveries in the scientific world during the last century, but the discovery of Christian Science, in 1866, by Mary Baker Eddy, is the most wonderful of all. The simplicity of Christian Science enables a child to demonstrate it; but at the same time it is so profound that after years of study the knowledge gained may still be said to be elementary. About six years ago I was feeling very much dissatisfied with religion. I had attended an orthodox church from early childhood, but often wondered what I had gained by it. I knew no more of God and a future state than I did as a child. At this time Christian Science was introduced to me by friends, who also lent me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read the book eagerly. It was evident to me at once that it contained the truth about God and man. The practical part of this religion appealed to me strongly. It was logical and could be demonstrated. I determined to prove it at the first opportunity, which soon came.

For eight years I had suffered with hay fever and asthma. A fortnight after I began to study Christian Science, I had a bad attack of asthma, aggravated by a severe cold and followed with pleurisy. I refused to have medical aid, and trusted absolutely to God. For three days I was very ill. I read and prayed as we are taught in Christian Science; but the third night I was in great pain, and temptation assailed me. Was I being fair to my family? Yes, I was convinced I was doing right, and I clung to these words of Jesus: "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Very soon a great sense of peace came over me, and I fell into a refreshing sleep. I slept until morning, then awoke perfectly well. I could breathe freely; there was no cough, no pain. I was completely healed.

TAFT, CALIFORNIA (First Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by David Munson Mulford, who said:—

You all know what it would mean to you if when crossing a desert you found yourself without water; and how you would welcome someone who could guide you to a fresh, cool spring, where you could refresh yourself and quench your thirst. I traveled through a desert land for years, ever reaching out for the lasting truth; but it seemed to vanish, just as the mirage of the desert, until "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was handed to me. In this I found an answer to my longings, and a guide to Life, Truth, and Love. As Moses guided the children of Israel through the desert land and through the Red Sea, so this book guides to Life eternal.

TRINIDAD, COLORADO (First Church).

Lecturer: W. Stuart Booth; introduced by Mrs. Nora G. Kelley, who said:—

In the Bible we find Christ Jesus' invitation to all the world: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." These words, uttered centuries ago, have brought hope and comfort to many a human heart; and this same promise, repeated in Christian Science to-day, is drawing untold thousands to its glorious teaching, and bids all mankind to turn from the discordant testimony of the physical senses to the pure source of divine Love, which knows no fear, no sickness, no sin. It is with joy that I can bear testimony that this promise is true, through the loving help of a Christian Science practitioner and an earnest study and application of this truth. I have experienced many healings—one in particular, of a great fear of death; also of extreme nervousness, weak lungs, and chronic catarrh of the head. Many other physical ailments, too, have disappeared. All I have to-day of health and peace of mind I owe to Christian Science. The demonstration of Christian Science is proving conclusively to me the words of Isaiah, "The Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save."
