Spiritual Overcoming
"THE Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good," Mrs. Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 450). Spiritual understanding is, then, the basis of Christian Science treatment, whereby the claims of mortal mind are destroyed. The uplifting of thought to a clear understanding of God's allness is what is needed to destroy error of every sort; for in proportion as one realizes the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, no room is left in consciousness for anything but good. Since God is infinite divine Mind, or Spirit, His universe is altogether spiritual. And Mind must have countless ideas, good thoughts; for while God is Mind, He is also good. All good thoughts are healing thoughts, admitting of no evil; and they bless all mankind.
Good thoughts should be held unceasingly by those who understand God's omnipotence. Error could not be real unless God made it; but since God, good, could not create anything unlike Himself, He did not create evil. Evil cannot possibly have any part in infinite good; hence evil is unreal. Thus error vanishes under the dissolving influence of right thinking.
Need mankind fear that which does not exist? Assuredly not! However, this does not mean we should be asleep to the claims of mortal mind, and be serenely content with the mere repetition of some appealing phrase, such as "God is All" or "God is Love." On the contrary, we should use our understanding of that allness and Love always to deny the claims of error. First, the searchlight of Truth must be turned on the error and its claim to reality uncovered, that it may be destroyed and its nothingness established. Then evil will be proved powerless to harm in any way. The one all-healing influence is Love, because Love is God. There is, therefore, need for the reflection of more of the loving qualities of God. Love penetrates the seemingly unlovely and sees only the real, the God-created man, manifesting perfect harmony. The more the perfect state of man is held in consciousness, the sooner will harmony be universally manifested. Let us, then, all pour forth more love to all mankind.
