The One Mind

Christian Science has brought many spiritual wonders to light, but it is doubtful whether any of them is greater than the truth that there is only one Mind, the divine Mind, God. When first this truth comes to us, we are apt to be amazed; for matter has appeared so real to us, and material phenomena, so called, have occupied so much of our attention. Now a blow has been struck at these beliefs, and our very existence may seem to tremble, as it were, in the balance, because to recognize even dimly that there is but one Mind, one infinite Mind, is to perceive, however feebly, that matter and all that pertains thereto is unreal.

Christ Jesus understood God's—Spirit's—allness, and knew in consequence that matter is unreal; every healing, every so-called miracle he wrought, proved the fact. But he did not state these truths in so many words; it remained for Christian Science to do that. Now the great spiritual truth is being published over the whole world that there is only one Mind, one infinitely good Mind, one all-knowing Mind, and that this perfect Mind manifests itself everywhere in the universe of perfect ideas—teaching the most revolutionary ever presented to men in the name of religion and Science.

The question naturally arises, Of what value to mankind is the truth that there is but one Mind? Christian Science replies that its value is inestimable. What do we find to-day? A world groaning under the burden of materialism; sickness, sorrow, suffering rife; poverty the too frequent lot of many; sensualism in many a form draining the vitality, the happiness, the peace, the joy of thousands. How is this state of things to be rectified or healed? Acts of parliaments will not do it. Mere emotional acknowledgment of, and regret at, its seeming existence will not do it. It will remain in greater or less degree until the whole human race changes the basis of its thinking from matter to Mind, until the fundamental truth is universally acknowledged that in reality there exists one infinite Mind and its perfect manifestation, man.
