The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Edinburgh, Scotland (First Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie; introduced by John White, who said:—

Those of you who are familiar with the seventeenth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles will recall the interesting record regarding a small group of thoughtful people at Berea, of whom little is known, but who have secured a place in the gallery of remembrance through the manifestation of two splendid qualities. It was said of them that "they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." The example of the Bereans comes with significance to an audience in the capital of a Bible-loving country. Christian Science was discovered after continuous and open-minded Bible study. The first personal healing of its Discoverer, Mary Baker Eddy, came through the spiritual illumination of how the palsied man was healed, as told in Matthew, ninth chapter. As a natural development of this illumination and lovingly to make it accessible to all, Mrs. Eddy wrote a book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." That book is not another Bible, as is sometimes mistakenly said, but a "key," by which humble and teachable minds may find the spiritual import of the greatest of all books.
