Although I had been under the care of Christian Science...

Although I had been under the care of Christian Science for several years, I did not begin to make my own demonstrations until my sophomore year in high school. After a six weeks' siege of chills, which stubbornly refused to yield to a patient application of the truth as understood by different practitioners, it suddenly dawned on me that I might have some work to do. After a few hours of study, and with the help of a practitioner, the erroneous condition was soon corrected. Since then there have been many occasions on which I found the way out of a difficulty simply by knowing my rightful inheritance and demanding a full measure of it. I have found in my profession of teaching that no rules require a more exact application than do those of Christian Science. It has helped me to solve many knotty problems of discipline; and only through its aid do I expect to become a really successful teacher.

Many times in my study of Christian Science I had wondered if in time of a sudden crisis I would be able to trust wholly in my knowledge of God as omnipotent—that is, without a qualm of fear or doubt. My first test came when I was away from home during my first year of teaching. I was suddenly attacked with what was pronounced by my boarding mistress pneumonia. She immediately began to prepare for an extended illness. After some persuasion on my part she consented not to call a doctor until the next morning, and to inform my mother of the condition immediately. By the next morning I had arisen at the usual early hour and appeared for breakfast. The astonishment of the family was as genuine as my recovery.

The second test came upon me so suddenly that I realized instantly—almost mechanically, it seemed—that God is my Life. I do not wish to relate the details of the disaster which came to Murphysboro, Illinois, for we who were tried are endeavoring by an earnest effort to remember only the good. My first reason for gratitude, however, was for the understanding of how to clarify my thought instantly. Whatever the testimony of the senses, we were "in the secret place of the most High" and "under the shadow of the Almighty." Before I was fully aware of what was happening, while I was yet in charge of forty little youngsters, I was constantly declaring the omnipotence and omnipresence of God. My first thought was that I would be shown what to do with my pupils; and even as I prayed I noticed a little one with just a shade of fear on her face, and stepping back to her seat I had just whispered to her to repeat the Lord's Prayer when our east wall crashed out and part of the ceiling collapsed.
