About fifteen years ago Christian Science was brought...

About fifteen years ago Christian Science was brought to my attention through the healing and regeneration of a near and very dear relative. I was engaged in a business which necessitated the employing of several hundred men and I seemed always to be pressed for time, not then knowing the difference between being busy and being in a hurry, getting only occasional glimpses of the Science of Life as expressed by Christian Science through friends and relatives and more or less indifferent reading of Christian Science publications.

Though I had become loaded up with business responsibilities and obligations, I was led to realize in some measure that even though I should ultimately be successful in acquiring and possessing the whole earth, not having peace of mind, or possessing or knowing my own soul, I would indeed be very poor. So I was impelled to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. On a business trip to Chicago this precious book became my only companion. Upon my return home I had read it through twice from cover to cover. What a wonderful transformation had taken place in my consciousness of my outlook upon life! So many of the things that I was doing and had under contemplation now seemed wrong, and some utterly impossible. I continued to study Christian Science by reading Mrs. Eddy's writings and the Christian Science periodicals.

During the latter years of the World War I became engaged in taking out spruce logs for aeroplane stock on the Queen Charlotte Islands, about four hundred miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia; and in 1919, during an epidemic, I had in the neighborhood of one hundred men in my logging camp. There were over thirty camps on these islands, all engaged in this work. Word came to us at the Vancouver office that these camps were becoming demoralized because of the epidemic. For many weeks I had endeavored to realize through my slight understanding of Christian Science that this seemingly world-wide epidemic, through which many peoples and nations were in a state of prostration, was but a lie. It was not true; it could not be true. I discussed the situation with a friend, a Christian Science practitioner, and work was earnestly and lovingly taken up. I gathered together some Christian Science literature and took the first boat to the islands. During my absence I found that within half a mile of my camp a large hospital had been erected, which on my arrival was filled with influenza sufferers. Outgoing boats carried large numbers of patients. Many of the camps were being closed down entirely. When I arrived at my camp I found the work going on normally; the men were all in good health, and no case of influenza was in evidence. I settled down at the office with my Bible, the Christian Science textbook, and the Christian Science periodicals. The camp continued free from the disease; not one case of the sickness developed. God's tender love and presence literally filled the place. I have never come nearer seeing God face to face than then. Wonderful opportunity was afforded to realize the divine presence and power.
