I suffered with a very severe case of tonsillitis for several days. Then I shut myself up in a room with my Christian Science textbooks and determined to master the situation. For hours I studied faithfully. I actually seemed to see and understand the unreality of the claim, but the healing did not take place. The next day I went to a practitioner who had been spoken highly of, and who lived six blocks distant. She gave me a treatment, and said as I was leaving that she felt I was healed. Apparently I was not healed, and as I commenced the trip back on foot I felt very much discouraged. When the distance was about half covered, I noticed that the swelling in my throat was beginning to abate. This continued, and when I had finished the trip, the healing was almost complete.

Mrs. Eddy has said that to hold disease "as something seen and felt" and then to attempt its cure in Christian Science is "mental quackery" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 395). My tonsils were so swollen that the mere process of swallowing was extremely painful. Relief from this condition was my underlying desire; so much so, that I was thereby admitting the reality of disease; and this apparently had prevented my own demonstration.
