In a letter to the Advertiser containing a defense of allopathic medicine, a doctor sets forth the importance of "preventive medicine" and of the treatment of disease in its earlier stages. Fair-minded people everywhere recognize and give due credit to the worthy motives that characterize the efforts of honest physicians to-day. It is regrettable that the doctor has in his letter classified Christian Scientists with those who "have been a handicap to preventive medicine." As a matter of fact, Christian Science is eminently successful in the prevention as well as in the cure of disease. Vast multitudes of people over the world are daily testifying to this fact, and their lives are truly indicative of the power of prayer to protect, heal, and save. Right thinking and a life lived close to God are the greatest preventives of disease known to mankind. Christian Scientists abide by the laws of quarantine in cases of contagious and infectious disease. They have a high regard for the rights of their fellow-men; and they appreciate the efforts of physicians to alleviate the sufferings of humanity. Christian Scientists believe in the Golden Rule, and they would not stand in the way of anyone who wished to employ a medical doctor. They, however, claim the right to rely upon the Great Physician for the cure of their own distresses. It is a well-known fact that most Christian Scientists have become such after all else had failed them.

Healing through prayer is an historical fact. It was the method employed by Christ Jesus and his disciples, and is in accord with Christ Jesus' commands to his followers throughout all time. There are large numbers of broadminded medical doctors who recognize the great good and the actual healing power in Christian Science. In Mrs. Eddy's book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 123, 124), it is stated that "Christian Science differs from material science, but not on that account is it less scientific. On the contrary, Christian Science is pre-eminently scientific, being based on Truth, the Principle of all science." It is true that longevity has increased among those who have embraced its teachings.
