Signs of the Times

[Dr. Jean Bertrand in Le Matin, Paris, France (translation)]

Science considers to-day that it may no longer ignore problems which may appear to be most inaccessible. Unknown forces come to light and unfold. Thought is power—there are good thoughts and bad thoughts. Fear, jealousy, egotism depress and sterilize us. Faith, altruism, and energy are germs which create happiness. Generous thoughts carry in themselves ... light and unlimited action. Let us develop these for our fellow creatures. This requires only a little effort; for the faculties of soul may be developed ... through exercise and discipline. It would be so easy to acquire moral strength and health—but, who shall teach this to us? And yet, it is high time we make the effort if we do not wish to lose our greatness as a people and degenerate. The Anglo-Saxons have already understood this problem. In France, private initiative leads the way. Our schools teach the children, but rely upon life to educate them instead of teaching us all the means by which to direct and develop our inner self, and thus sowing in our children's soul the germ of the regenerating strength of good. As spring labors under the winter snow, the hours of material pleasures ... we are now going through hide in their barren frenzy the need of an ideal necessary for the equilibrium of a perfectible humanity. Let men of good will express very highly this ideal and the people will follow, for they will thus awake the latent desires which now slumber. Someone must create this current. ... For our own happiness, let us make use of the power we have within us, but which we ignore.
