In a recent issue of your paper, under the caption "Personal Health Service," conducted by a doctor, a correspondent signing himself "G. G. A." offers several of his own ideas as to what constitutes an optimist. When the doctor speaks of the person who "by coincidence" improves after trying a "freak healing cult," he probably refers to one who is healed under Christian Science treatment. In the first instance, Webster defines the adjective "Christian" as "following Christ's precepts and example." The word "science" denotes exact knowledge of a subject. In connection with the word "Christian," it is used to designate that this teaching is an exact, or provable, application of the teachings and practices of Christ Jesus. The Master plainly commanded his followers to preach the gospel, cast out devils (evil), and heal the sick. And he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," and "By their fruits ye shall know them." Christian Scientists have been healing the sick and reclaiming the sinner for over fifty years on the basis of his teachings, with an ever increasing measure of success. It is essentially Christian, and indisputably scientific.

It is recorded that Jesus did not many mighty works in certain localities because of their unbelief. Could it be called a "coincidence" when he did elsewhere heal the sick and raise the dying and the dead? Neither is it a "coincidence" when persons are healed by Christian Science treatment after their cases have been pronounced incurable by the doctors. All will agree that justice is a divine attribute, and that it blesses those who practice it. One who is blinded by prejudice is all too prone to accept as fact that which he believes a thing to be, and not what it really is. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 341 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," has written: "In Christian Science mere opinion is valueless. Proof is essential to a due estimate of this subject. Sneers at the application of the word Science to Christianity cannot prevent that from being scientific which is based on divine Principle, demonstrated according to a divine given rule, and subjected to proof."
