Early in the winter of 1913 Christian Science was presented...
Early in the winter of 1913 Christian Science was presented to me by a friend who had greatly benefited by its teachings, and who knew it was the only thing that could help me. I was a very unhappy, discontented woman at that time, suffering from fits of deep depression and chronic stomach trouble. I knew very little about the Bible and remember feeling ashamed to tell her I did not possess one, before she went with me to buy my first Bible. She persevered with me until I went with her to a testimony meeting. I was greatly impressed by the singing of Mrs. Eddy's hymn beginning, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14), and it was plain to me that I had found what I needed. A Christian Science Hymnal was kindly lent to me by one of the members, and during the week we constantly sang and played this beautiful hymn. This led my husband to come to the services with me. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was borrowed; and through the reading of this wonderful book, which revealed the Christ, Truth, to me, the depression gradually lifted.
I had suffered all my life with stomach trouble. Everything possible had been tried, but my doctor told me that I would never be really free from this condition. He could only give me ease for a time. Everything I ate gave me great pain and caused fermentation. I was always fearful of what I ate, because of the discomfort it caused me. Over six years ago, by the faithful, loving work of a practitioner, I was healed, and have not had a recurrence of the disease since that time. My healing was not a quick one; but when I look back I can see that there were many faults of character to be overcome before the physical could yield. To-day, I can eat anything that is set before me; and I have no fear, knowing that food has no power or intelligence to cause suffering, as God is the only power. Mrs. Eddy states (Science and Health, p. 390), "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."
I should like to tell of another beautiful healing I experienced, from influenza, in 1921. I had just finished cooking my Christmas dinner when I was suddenly taken ill with this disease. I tried to know the truth as we are taught in Christian Science, but found I was getting worse; and as bronchial pneumonia followed, the same practitioner was sent for who had so lovingly helped me before. I was having a hard fight, and those around me asked if I would like to have a doctor instead; but I said, "No," that if I could not have Christian Science treatment I would have nothing. Fear never once got hold of me, although I was very near "the valley of the shadow;" and I am thankful to say that I felt God's presence more at that time than I ever had before.
