For years I was in bondage to the use of drugs and stimulants. Although I had been trained by godly parents, and lived in a Christian home, the allurements of the world in business and social relations led me into the use of intoxicating liquors. I always had a strong desire to live a useful life, and there were many struggles toward this end; but the drug habit seemed to become stronger than my resolutions. In my heart I abhorred it; but my associations seemed to encourage it, and at last I almost ceased to struggle, and only drifted. But early training, and a natural love for the good and beautiful, caused me to seek relief at various sanitariums, where only material methods were used. While I feel sure the many medical men in charge were sincere in their efforts to relieve me, no permanent relief was afforded. I read books on faith cures, and many books on ethics. I read the Bible constantly, and especially the accounts of Jesus' ministry which told of the casting out of all manner of sin and disease; but their spiritual import seemed never to dawn upon me.
I prayed fervently for light, and was rewarded by having a dear friend tell me of Christian Science and what it had done and was doing for those in distress. I had heard of Christian Science and had at one time written to Mrs. Eddy on the subject, about the year 1908, and received a reply telling me that she took no patients, but referring me to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and advising me to consult a practitioner in a near-by city. But I was densely ignorant of the teachings of Christian Science, and as I had been advised by my family and friends that it was not of the Bible but the work of the devil, I passed it over for the time. When, however, I had exhausted all material means and found myself seemingly sinking into utter oblivion, I heeded my friend's advice and asked for help in Christian Science.
A dear practitioner came to me. I was at that time almost penniless, and so told her, but she gave me treatment and I was healed instantly. This was thirteen years ago, and since then I have had no more desire for drugs than has a newborn babe. Nor have I ever used or thought of using material remedies of any kind. All such desires, including the use of stimulants, were promptly destroyed by the loving help of a practitioner. I have never spent a day in bed in this time, for all difficulties have been promptly overcome with the help of a practitioner or through my own understanding of Christian Science. Soon after my first healing I took my place again among men, and have been constantly employed in lucrative and honorable work. The wonderful light that has come to me in the study of the Bible and Science and Health, as revealed to me by the study of our Lesson-Sermons, is beyond words to express.
