About eight years ago I found myself in a state of darkness,...

About eight years ago I found myself in a state of darkness, crying out for light. I was apparently entering "the valley of the shadow of death;" I was suffering from tuberculosis, and the specialist whom I had twice consulted, pronounced it a case of fourteen years' standing.

Accepting the belief that I was soon to leave my loved ones, I talked with my husband regarding the welfare of our daughter, then thirteen years of age; and having been assured by him that he would tenderly care for her to the best of his ability, I began to pray for light to die by, the sense of darkness seemed so real. I prayed God earnestly for three months to send light, that I might not die in such a state of darkness.

"Desire is prayer," Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1). The earnest desire of my heart was granted when a Christian Scientist, a willing channel for love, brought to our home The Christian Science Journal and asked me to read the first testimony therein. I knew very little of Christian Science, but willingly consented to read what this dear one, with a helpful thought, had brought to me. I read the testimony and found it to be a case quite similar to my own, with the exception of the healing. I endeavored to get in touch with this Scientist the following day. She came to our home at nine o'clock in the morning, and we sat until two o'clock in the afternoon, while she told me of God's goodness and of His perfect creation. I asked her to treat me and she consented to do so, although she had been a student of Christian Science but three years. The following morning (Sunday) I awakened with a profound sense of joy and realization of light. I was at that time sleeping out of doors, as I had been all winter. I arose, dressed myself, and attended my first Christian Science service. I found that I had been instantaneously healed of the disease, and that Christian Science was the light I had been earnestly praying for; and it has proved to be a light to live by, having no partnership with death.
