When a member of our family was healed through the...
When a member of our family was healed through the understanding of a practitioner I was very bitter against Christian Science and lost no opportunity to ridicule it. However, I noticed improvements in this individual which I could not deny.
One night I was alone and a great fear of burglars seemed to possess me. I said all the prayers which I had been taught to say in the church which I attended, but my fear increased. In desperation I turned to the textbook on Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, never believing it would help me. I read the first chapter on Prayer and then went to bed and slept the whole night through. Still I said nothing; but I had to admit to myself that I had received a peace that I could never attain from my present belief of God. From then on I always read when fear seemed the strongest, but clung to my religious beliefs and rituals.
About six months later our little boy was taken sick with what the doctors diagnosed as a trouble of the kidneys. I called in two of the best physicians, and they were of the same opinion. The child suffered greatly. For six months the treatments and diet assigned by the doctors were followed, but the boy seemed to remain the same. As a last resort, I permitted him to have treatment in Christian Science. In three weeks he was healed. My faith in Christian Science was sure then, and one by one the old religious beliefs left me. Then came my journey through the wilderness, when faith had to become spiritual understanding. Through the loving help of a practitioner and friends, and by the constant study and application of the teachings of Science and Health, I was led into the realization of God's love and protection.
