It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I herewith submit the account of the wonderful healing which was my first experience in Christian Science. Of the thirty-three years that I spent in Japan, fully two thirds were marred by suffering, invalidism, or convalescence. I had many physical diseases, such as typhoid malaria, heart trouble, abscesses, nervous prostration, stomach troubles, and so on. Often I stood face to face with death. Then at last, when I had been lying in bed for half a year, almost unable to move for weakness and weariness, the physicians discovered that I was suffering from a tumor. This new trouble, added to a lifetime of suffering, brought me to the end of both physical and mental strength. I feared life as much as death; and I knew I should never be able to go through what the physicians called a major operation, which was in store for me as the only resource. I was walking in the "valley of the shadow of death," despondent, suffering, hopeless.
Then there came to me a "still small voice," saying, Do you know anything about Christian Science? No, I did not; but I might just as well try that as anything else. I was taken to see a loving practitioner, who commenced to treat me. I shall never forget the result. Within a couple of weeks the tumor disappeared. I felt the very moment when I got relief; and I cried out for joy, for I knew that I was healed. And I understood how those who were healed by Jesus must have felt. Afterwards I was examined by two physicians, who declared that there was no sign of tumor to be found.
From that moment my recovery went on; and although I could not directly grasp all that Christian Science meant, it was the turning point of my life. By degrees every ill left me; and I am now enjoying perfect health after so many years of suffering. During the last years I have never asked the advice of a doctor; neither have I used any medicine. Infinite Mind, ever powerful, ever loving, ever ready to meet and heal all our woes, has been my only physician. My heart is overflowing with gratitude to God and also to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, that brave woman who, although faced by difficulties of all kinds, still pursued her work, which has revolutionized thinking and brought it more and more into accordance with Jesus' teachings. I should like also to express my thanks to the kind practitioner who showed me the way.—(Mrs.) Ida H. Trotzig, Stockholm, Sweden.
