Putting Joy into Our Work

It is often asked, "How can I put joy into my work when I have such adverse conditions surrounding me?" In reply it may be questioned, What are these conditions but false beliefs? The more real we believe adverse conditions to be, the closer we are drawing the robes of error about us.

One morning, while the writer was sitting near her study window, she was attracted by the song of one who was driving two mules which were drawing a very crude old wagon partially filled with vegetables. This person had turned his work into joy by making a song about all the different vegetables he had to sell, thereby attracting the attention of the residents as he drove along the streets. This soon enabled him to sell promptly all his produce.

One definition of "work" is, "Physical or intellectual effort directed to an end." How are we, as Christian Scientists, doing our work? What should our effort be but to prove the allness of God and our relation to Him? We may awake in the morning and begin our day's activity by first expressing gratitude for our supply, the sunshine, the song of the birds, and for the fact that we are learning each day more about the true God. As we go about our duty, be it care of the home, salesmanship, office work, banking, or whatever else, we can know that the only real work there can be is the business of learning to know God and to serve Him better.
