A contributor's remarks in your recent issue, reprinted from another paper, indicate that he has the very mistaken notion that Christian Science has something in the nature of magic and malicious animal magnetism in its teaching and practice. Quite the contrary is the fact. Christian Science teaches that there is but one real Mind or intelligence, called God, from which emanate spiritual qualities only. Such qualities are unchangeable, partaking of the nature of God, "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." Magic, animal magnetism, hypnotism, et cetera, are products of what Paul called the "carnal mind," which is "enmity against God," and which Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, calls "mortal mind." Compared with divine Mind, they are negative mental states, human beliefs, not founded in Spirit or in Truth, and have only such seeming reality or power as a lack of spiritual understanding attributes to them.

As stated by Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 102): "Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His power is neither animal nor human. Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in sense it is an unreal concept of the so-called mortal mind."
