We shall appreciate an opportunity to correct any false impression that may have been conveyed by a reference to Christian Science which appeared in a recent issue, under the caption, "The Nature of Man: Mortal or Immortal." Christian Science does not teach, as your contributor implies, that man has life in and of himself, independent of God; neither does it teach that 'death is but another form of life." Christian Science teaches, even as do the Scriptures, that since God is Life, it must and does necessarily follow that life is eternal.
Furthermore, Christian Science teaches that the real man, the spiritual man, made in the image and likeness of God, reflects or expresses the eternal and indestructible nature of that Life which is God. Christian Science also holds that we possess immortality as we understand or consciously reflect the nature and character of God and His Christ. "This is life eternal," said Jesus, "that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." It will be seen, therefore, that Christian Science, basing its teaching upon the statements of the Master, definitely maintains that spiritual understanding furnishes the only preventive or protention by means of which humankind may escape the experience called death; and Christian Science further holds, in accordance with Scriptural authority, that the belief of death would have no power over us if we, like Jesus, possessed this spiritual understanding in a perfect degree. Instead of death being another form of life, Christian Science definitely teaches that it is nothing more than an experience through which mortals seem to pass because they lack a correct understanding of God as Life. Again to quote Jesus on this point, it will be recalled that he said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." Bearing directly on this question Mrs. Eddy has said in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 428): "Life is real, and death is the illusion. A demonstration of the facts of Soul in Jesus' way resolves the dark visions of material sense into harmony and immortality. Man's privilege at this supreme moment is to prove the words of our Master: 'If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.'"
