At a time of discouragement and physical discomfort,...
At a time of discouragement and physical discomfort, after I had tried many kinds of treatment in the hope of gaining health and strength, without satisfactory results, my attention was called to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Seeing a great change for the better in a friend who had come to visit us, who told of her new interest in Christian Science, and of the textbook used in her study, I was prompted to secure a copy and to investigate the teachings of Mrs. Eddy. The result was a complete breaking down of the barriers of human prejudice and criticism. I realized almost at once that Christian Science was based entirely on the Bible and the teachings of Christ Jesus; that it was the message for which I had been longing and searching in vain; and that it would heal me and meet my every need. I felt I had found the "pearl of great price."
All this has been proved in my experience since earnest study began. A sense of exhaustion gradually disappeared, and strength for daily work was realized; worry and nervousness gave place to peace and harmony; love for the Bible increased with the understanding that its promises were meant for me; and joy over a newly found practical religion filled my heart.
Many healings of physical ills have been realized, among which were the overcoming of stomach disorder of many years' standing, of a very annoying throat trouble that prevented vocal practice, which I greatly desired to do, and of an internal trouble which the physician said would require an operation within a certain period of time. For twelve years I had worn glasses for what was called astigmatism, but they were cast aside after three days of realization that "God is no respecter of persons" and that He is "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." Each day there came a clearer understanding that man is not dependent on material help, but upon God, the "very present help in trouble."
