Signs of the Times

[From the Daily Express, London, England]

The Industrial Christian Fellowship has issued two eloquent appeals. One is signed by more than a hundred and fifty trade unionists and leaders of Labor. The other is signed by scores of capitalists and employers representing all branches of industry and commerce. Both of these remarkable documents call for the application of the teaching of Christ [Jesus] to our social problems. . . . The Labor manifesto declares that "statesmanship will fail and political programs will be futile as a solvent of social troubles unless they embody the spirit and practice of Christ." The capitalists and employers are at-one with the Labor leaders in their appeal for the inner unity which transcends the sectional conflicts which dislocate productive industry. The significance of this movement is unmistakable. It is a revelation of the new visions and new ideals which have found expression in our own columns. Religion is permeating the relations between Capital and Labor. It is not the opiate of the people. On the contrary, it should be their reconciler and conciliator. The Christian spirit should enroll and classes in a common endeavor to build up a real industrial fellowship based on brotherhood and good will.
