Our Fiftieth Anniversary

July Fourth marked the anniversary of two great events, both of untold importance to mankind: one, the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by the American Colonies, an event which gave to the cause of democracy a tremendous impetus; the other, the fiftieth anniversary of the organization of the Christian Science denomination, having for its sacred purpose the setting free of all mankind from the mental salvery which from the beginning had characterized the experience of mortals.

The Christian Science denomination, founded upon a great nation's natal day, has developed into a movement literally world-wide, which through the exemplification of the truth that makes free is of incalculable importance in the transforming of human consciousness from a material to a spiritual basis. The history of the organization established by Mary Baker Eddy to "commemorate the words and works of our Master, a Mind-healing church" (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 44), in its healing and regenerative works has proved the wisdom which guided its Founder to be divine; for nothing less than divine wisdom could have guided her hand in the founding of a movement which could successfully combat the claims of so-called mortal mind, while itself withstanding the most threatening attacks of error.

The activities of Christian Science movement make for peace and prosperity, for healing and happiness, for harmony and holiness; they have the sacred purpose to commemorate the words and reproduce the works of Christ Jesus, the Founder of Christianity. In this commemoration, our Leader foresaw the reestablishment of primitive Christianity, the Christianity organized by the disciples and immediate followers of the Master. Without creed or formalism, its services and practice based upon the simplest usages, the Christian Science movement has gone forward to bless all who have experienced the beneficent influence of the gentle Christ. Healed and regenerated millions bear witness to the fulfillment of our Leader's holy purpose to bless all mankind by transforming human experience through realization of the infinite presence of good.
