Angels
The question, "What are angels?" which has engaged the attention of thinkers throughout the ages, is wonderfully illuminated by Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 581), where she gives the following definition: "Angels. God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality."
In Bible history, the angel messengers of divine Love are sometimes mentioned as taking the form of men. They have also come as a "still small voice" speaking in the individual consciousness, as for example when at the burning bush, which was not consumed, Moses was told, "Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground." These angels from divine Love inspire and guide humanity out of its beliefs in pain, sin, and sorrow, into the way of health, holiness, peace, and joy.
Christ Jesus said, as it is recorded in the fourteenth chapter of John's Gospel, "The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." It is a great joy to contemplate the loving-kindness of our heavenly Father-Mother God in thus providing for us the means whereby we may escape from sin, sickness, all inharmony. Sometimes evil suggestions present themselves and clamor for admission into consciousness, as when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness before he began his ministry. It is recorded of this experience that angels came and ministered unto him, and that he destroyed the evil suggestions with the words, "Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
