Using the Little We Know

The beginner in the study of Christian Science, when confronted by some problem, may feel that the understanding which he has gained is not sufficient to meet and master the seeming difficulty, and instead of arguing on the side of Truth, he may unconsciously argue on the side of error, thereby giving evil the power it claims to have. It was recently impressed upon a student of Christian Science that by using the little of the truth we know, we are inspired, protected, and regenerated. As she read the familiar story in the Bible of David and Goliath, found in the seventeenth chapter of I Samuel, the truth of this statement was more clearly seen. We are told that David, a mere youth who tended his father's sheep, went forth, unafraid, to meet and conquer Goliath. David was inexperienced in warfare; while Goliath was a seasoned warrior. The youth, putting off the armor which Saul the king had placed upon him, said, "I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them." Instead, he relied absolutely upon the power of Truth, which he had proved before, knowing the nothingness of boastful error, confident that the power which had delivered him from the paw of the lion, and from the paw of the bear, would deliver him from the hand of the Philistine. And so he silenced Goliath of Gath.

When one first takes up the study of Christian Science, one may think that in order to solve his daily problems much spiritual understanding must first be acquired, and that perhaps the ability to demonstrate harmony may be a special gift bestowed upon only a favored few; but as the study of Christian Science is continued, many personal experiences prove that we can successfully use what we understand of Christian Science, that the healing Truth is ever available to all who will turn to it willing to apply the knowledge they have gained, and striving to win an ever clearer realization of the allness of God and the nothingness of evil.

Mrs. Eddy states in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 449): "A little leaven causes the whole mass to ferment. A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." We gain inspiration through close study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, striving to grasp the truth contained therein. By rejecting the suggestions of evil which present themselves, and turning away from the evidence of the deceitful senses, we are enabled to replace thoughts of fear with courage, thereby realizing the loving Father's protecting care.
