Signs of the Times
[Dr. Wicher, in the Marin, San Anselmo, California]
"Love is the fulfilling of the law." It may seem strange that we should bring together these two apparently contrary conceptions, law and love. But the truth is that the law is never kept unless there is love, and is kept just to the extent that love reigns in our hearts. There is not needed any penalty to prevent one man from stealing from another, if he loves that other man. He would rather give him something of his own than steal. Love fulfills the law. And in like manner it fulfills every law. Our greatest need as a community, and as a nation, is more love for one another. And love—is of God.
