More than twenty years ago I heard for the first time the term "Christian Science." While listening to an explanation of the power of God to heal the sick in this day through the teaching of Christian Science, I was at once healed of a severe attack of nervous headache. The lady who talked to me told me also of her healing through Christian Science after materia medica had failed her, thus being enabled to resume her work of teaching in an art school. This was confirmed by her sister-in-law.
As I was then experiencing hardships through continued loss of health, I lost no time in seeking to borrow a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and beginning to read it. I had read but one evening, jealously hoping no learned persons could be able to prove its statements untrue, when another book was offered me purporting to teach mental healing and considered to be easier to comprehend. Glancing over some of its pages, I could see in them no connection with the Scriptural accounts of Jesus' healing power, which from earliest childhood it had been my delight to consider, and therefore I had no inclination to read the book.
The tempter came again when I was reading, in the chapter on Christian Science Practice in Science and Health, the account of the mental court case. It appeared that I could not like it; so Science and Health was put aside, and later returned to the owner with the assurance that I was not through with it, but would look into it another time.
