God's Protecting Care and Guidance

During a vacation in the country, the attention of a Christian Scientist was arrested by the calling of birds. High in the heavens, three birds were seen in flight. The male bird was leading the way; the mother bird, guiding a fledgling most tenderly and assisting it, was some distance in the rear; betimes getting underneath it and carrying it for a short distance, then again allowing it to spread its own wings and follow on. Presently a distressed call went up from the fledgling, and without a moment's delay the mother flew to its rescue, trying to coax it along but without success; the little one's efforts seemed too frail. Then once more the mother bird flew underneath it, and bore it along until all three birds were out of sight.

In this incident there was brought home a lesson in tenderness, guidance, care, and protection, all of which indicated the operation of that love which the apostle tells us is the fulfilling of the law; and instantly thought rested on that verse in the ninety-first psalm: "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust." The spiritual understanding of this psalm in the light of Christian Science gained through the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the other writings of our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, guarantees a safe refuge in which to dwell, a refuge which protects from all evil. In this textbook (p. 113) Mrs. Eddy writes, "God is All-in-all." The student of Christian Science, accepting this as his premise, learns to place his trust in God to the exclusion of evil of every sort, which he recognizes as unreal, because not to God's creating.

God protects and guides every one of His ideas; not one of them is forgotten, for as Paul says, "In him we live, and move, and have our being." The Bible is replete with accounts of God's protecting care, and many instances of deliverance from evil could be cited. The prophets and apostles evidenced a sense of security from all untoward conditions and assaults made upon them by their enemies, both openly and in secret, and this security came to them through their understanding of God's law; hence their ability to demonstrate His nearness and love. No more noteworthy expression of praise and thanksgiving to God for His protecting care can be found than that voiced by King David, as recorded in the twenty-second chapter of II Samuel. He knew what had sustained and delivered him throughout all his trials and experiences; and no greater song of praise to God can be found elsewhere in the Scriptures.
