Christian Science came to me in direct answer to urgent prayer for a better understanding of God and the Bible. I had never read a line of Christian Science literature, and knew no Christian Scientists. With total loss of family, home, and support, life as I understood it had begun to seem strange and desolate. The writings of Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and the like were my constant companions; but while they preached noble thinking, the way to attain it was omitted. Then I searched for comforting verses to learn in the Bible; and in the truths of that Bock I began to place my longing hope.

In the back of my thought there had lingered for some time the intention to try the Christian Science healing I had heard of for insomnia and debility, from which I was suffering. Opportunity came to seek a Christian Science practitioner. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was put into my hands; and on opening to the chapter entitled "Prayer," I knew I had found the answer to my questionings. From that day to this I have desired no other interpretation of God's word, no better friend, no human physician.

Soon afterwards an opportunity appeared to prove the efficacy of spiritual healing on the body. I seemed prostrated with an attack of tonsillitis. The doctor and his wife were among my best friends, but I did not even want them to know of it. A few absent treatments, however, from the practitioner forever annihilated this old throat trouble, which had seemed veritably a part of my life.
