Friend
My attention has just been drawn to a report in the Friend of recent date of the inaugural address of the president of the Wesleyan Conference, at Port Elizabeth, during the course of which he mentions Christian Science in a manner which is likely to be misleading, and I shall be glad if you will kindly permit me to refer to it in your columns.
The president criticizes Mrs. Eddy for reducing sin "to a delusion." But what better guaranty is there of the possibility of the eventual destruction of sin than to show it to be a delusion? And, besides, she has the authority of Christ Jesus for that proposition. He referred to the devil (evil) as a liar and the father of it. And what is a lie but a delusion, if the lie is believed? And if it is not believed, it is not even a delusion. Mrs. Eddy does not, however, rest satisfied with showing the real nature of sin, but emphasizes the necessity of getting rid of it. Thus, on page 327 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook, Mrs. Eddy writes: "The way to escape the misery of sin is to cease sinning. There is no other way." And her writings abound with similar warnings. And then Mrs. Eddy clearly explains how God destroys sin. Christian Scientists find great comfort in the knowledge that God does destroy the belief of sin; and we read on page 339 of the book above referred to: "The destruction of sin is the divine method of pardon. Divine Life destroys death, Truth destroys error, and Love destroys hate. Being destroyed, sin needs no other form of forgiveness."
