I wish to tell with grateful heart how I came to Christian Science

I wish to tell with grateful heart how I came to Christian Science. In 1910 I had to undergo an operation for swollen glands, and when the physician was making his last call, I noticed a new swelling on the other side. When I told him on his final visit that the swelling was there, he said to me very sternly: "I will tell you something. If you believe you will have another swelling, you will have it; but if you think you will not have it, you will not."

A few months later, on the way to make a call at some distance on a sick person, I had a sudden conviction that there must be some power in the world which could heal the sick, and that the purer our lives, the greater would be the results. This thought did not leave me after that. From youth on, my earnest endeavor had been to serve and to do good to my fellow-men, and especially to the sick, who were close to my heart. By confident prayer I had already had some success for others as well as for myself.

Two years later a little book about Christian Science was lent me by a friend, who said there might be something in it for me. I read the book hastily but did not like it, and with the remark that it seemed to me like bombastic advertisement I gave it back. My friend said I had not understood it right at all, that Christian Science could heal, and that error could not keep me from learning the truth.
