Thinking Aright

Mankind is ever recognizing more fully the immense influence and power that thinking has in shaping, unfolding, and controlling the affairs of daily experience. Men and women who have accomplished great things have, unquestionably, been great thinkers; and many such people have emphasized the truism that thinking is fundamental. Shakespeare wrote, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." However, because thinking has been to a great extent based upon a belief that life and intelligence, with their intricacy of multitudinous activities, are the product of matter-processes, the development and expression of human thought have not always brought to humanity desirable results. They have not brought into human experience the peace and assurance rightfully belonging to man, for which mankind has sought throughout the ages.

Not until Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science and presented her discovery to the world, did it become possible for those who so desired consciously to possess the ability to direct their thinking aright. For until the advent of Christian Science, the great fact that God is infinite Mind, the divine Principle, source, and controller of all thought, had not been fully realized or demonstrated since our Master, Christ Jesus, and his early followers had proved divine Mind's beneficent power in healing the sick and sinning and raising the dead.

When Paul admonished the Philippians to have in them the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," he evidently realized that Jesus' unparalleled success in going about doing good, and healing every disease among the people, was due to his ability to know and reflect the Mind which is God. In the light of the Psalmist's statement, "Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite," there is sufficient reason for Mrs. Eddy's definition of God as infinite Mind, and for her further statement on page 492 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "God is Mind, and God is infinite; hence all is Mind. On this statement rests the Science of being, and the Principle of this Science is divine, demonstrating harmony and immortality."
