I was born and raised in the beliefs of ecclesiastical theology. Had I been asked if I believed in the supremacy and omnipotence of God, I should have answered that I certainly did, and should have resented the question as an aspersion on my religion. But when sickness appeared, I never thought of using my religion as a healing agency, but resorted to material medicines, not knowing that in this I was refuting the supremacy and omnipotence of God. Although acknowledging His power to heal sin, I was not acknowledging His power over all "the works of the devil," which include sickness and all discord; and this in the face of the fact that our Master healed the sick as well as the sinning, and admonished us to do the same.

My removal on reaching womanhood to a different environment also changed my mental outlook. I began to doubt my opinions of God and religion; but, like Job of old, I knew not where I might find Him. This discontented and anxious mental state brought much sickness, lack, and distress into the family. Different methods of hygiene and dieting were tried, but with no permanently good results.

Into this darkness came Christian Science as an angel from heaven. A healing took place in the family. One who had been very ill, and in a most helpess, hopeless state, was restored to normal activity and business with the first treatment in Christian Science. Nothing was known of Christian Science, but much that was false and spurious was believed about it. When called upon it proved its power to heal. This proof, however, seemed to bring on a warfare, all the old theological beliefs and prejudices rising in rebellion.
