The report in Hjemmenes Vel of Dr. Harald Schjelderup's...

Hjemmenes Vel

The report in Hjemmenes Vel of Dr. Harald Schjelderup's lecture on "Suggestion" contains an allusion to Christian Science that may be misunderstood; therefore I ask space for a short statement.

The professor admits that Christian Science heals; but, according to the report, he is of the opinion that Christian Science teaches that disease is only imagination, which can be suggested away. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 460): "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being." The truth on which Christian Science teaching is built is taken from the statement in the Bible that God is the only creator or cause. God cannot have been the creator of any evil; and as He has created all that really exists, Christian Science teaches that evil is unreal, because it does not exist in God or in the consciousness of God. The Bible teaches that man is the image and likeness of God; and this likeness cannot be unlike God, nor does it have its life in matter, separated from God. As man lives, moves, and has his being in God, there can in this unity be only perfect harmony. An understanding of this, which is gained through an earnest study of the Bible, by the aid of that light which Christian Science throws over its sacred pages, has nothing to do with suggestion, and it is therefore the most efficacious remedy for the healing of all kinds of suffering, not only functional but organic as well. Thousands of fully authenticated testimonies from those healed are to be found in the Christian Science periodicals, and others may be heard at the testimony meetings held in Christian Science churches throughout the civilized world. If it is the will of God that men shall suffer, Christ Jesus could not have worked against His will and healed all manner of suffering and disease. Neither would he have given the command, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." The words and works of Christ Jesus have never been counted as suggestion; and when we learn to understand the foundation of these works, this blessing must follow: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do."
