All mankind wants to progress, but the meaning of this...
All mankind wants to progress, but the meaning of this word depends upon the point of view. Through the study of Christian Science it is learned that, as Mrs. Eddy says in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 324), "The purification of sense and self is a proof of progress." That is what I am so grateful for,—that through obedience to the teachings of Christian Science I am learning how to purify thought.
Just five years ago I read the Christian Science textbook for the first time. The reading was undertaken prayerfully, with the desire that I might be sufficiently alert to know if it were true. Within three days it became evident to me that I had found the truth. The knowledge that "there is no power apart from God," as we read on page 228 of Science and Health, changed my whole outlook on life. The teachings were so revolutionary that I seemed to have hardly an old belief to lean upon; but, having still the attitude of a child, I recognized the irrefutable logic of even I could could not readily accept. When I finished reading the book, in two weeks, I found that a skin blemish, for which two medical doctors had prescribed unsuccessfully for several months, had been healed without conscious effort. Glasses were laid aside, and when a cold presented itself the new understanding was directed to overcoming it, and in three days I was healed. I was so hungry for the truth that I read all the writings of Mrs. Eddy, as well as a great deal in the Bible and the authorized literature, within the year. Through this constant study the mists of false thinking began to clear away.
The blessings of class instruction and membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and the privilege of serving the Cause, are mine. I am grateful to say that every need has been supplied during this time, generally through my own understanding. Harmony and peace have come to me in proportion as I have learned to love more, to be gently and kind,—that is, to "overcome evil with good."
