Authority

Throughout the Scriptures we are told that man has a divine inheritance which gives him dominion; that because he is the son of God, he has an incorruptible inheritance of regal power. Beginning with the story of creation in the first chapter of Genesis, we find God to be the author and creator of His idea or likeness, man, giving him dominion over all the earth. This dominion was in some degree exercised by the prophets. David used it, and immortalized his thought through singing praises to the Giver, his heavenly Father, omnipotent God. In the New Testament we read how Christ Jesus utilized this power through healing the sick, reclaiming the sinner, and correcting all discordant conditions. Jesus taught his disciples how to make their own, and how to use, this God-given authority.

Wherever manifested, this power has been looked upon as supernatural rather than as a gift bestowed from God. Christian Science comes with its comforting, healing message, proving to the world that this power comes from a right understanding of God and of man as His image and likeness. Jesus was the first to teach the spiritual significance of God's law, the operation of which destroys all beliefs of sin, sickness, and death. Former prophets, possessing this understanding in lesser degree, did not teach others how to impart grace and health, although they healed the sick and sorrowing and gave laws of ethics and morals; therefore it was to the teachings of Christ Jesus that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, turned to learn the law of the operation of divine Principle.

Through creed and dogma primitive Christianity with its healing power had been lost sight of until through her spiritual perception Mrs. Eddy gave hungering humanity a fixed rule whereby they could understand that Comforter which Jesus promised should abide with us and illume our way and guide us onward. This Comforter, or "Spirit of truth," brings to human consciousness peace and joy.
